Face Off - Complete! by Nicole-Marie-Walker Face Off - Complete! by Nicole-Marie-Walker
Tumblr | Etsy | Facebook | Flickr | Pinterest

Here it is, finally finished! (For the most part that is. ~_~) Be sure to zoom in for the full effect. ;D

Materials: .005 black micron pens, white colored pencil and Earthbound recycled paper.

I really like the way the trees came out in this piece, I'm kind of "iffy" about the sky though. I may at some subtle swirls to the background later and darken my dark areas some more, touch up my white areas as well. I'm just glad it's finally done! This took a lot of stippling and a lot of patience. Overall I'm happy with the result.

*Edit* A daily deviation? What a lovely surprise on my day off!

The use of white colored pencils is a great touch, especially on the back of the wolf. The trees are phenomenal in conveying a sense of space.

Thank you. =) I fell in love with this recycled paper because I love the way the white makes things pop right off the page.

I usually get them at the art store near where I live. I don't think it would be more than 20?

I found some prices here. I very much prefer the wire bound.

I also have this paper, it's a slightly different tone but still nice. And the paper is thicker.

That's not too bad of a price for something recycled! I prefer wire-bound as well...

Thicker paper does wonders with wet media *w*

I really love stippling even though it takes forever! I will work on a piece for a few days, then put it away for a month. Someday my next piece will be completed and posted! It's a 9-tailed fox spirit.

Great pic, very imaginative!
One question - what's 'stippling'?

Stippling/pointillism is using a series of dots to create an image. They dots can be large, or in my case, really small.

If you're interested in seeing more check out the group pointillism-legacy! Lots of neat stuff there.

Gorgeous!! Your technique and composition are great :) How do you stipple with such a fine pen without ruining it?

To be honest I ruin several pens in the process of a single piece. It usually takes me 2 or 3 pens. Of course it probably also depends on the kind of pens you get.

The thing is even when the pen is "ruined" you can sometimes still use it. If it's ruined in the sense of it isn't nice and black then I'll use it in cases where I don't want my ink completely black. I've always wanted a series of grey micron pens but all I've seen are black and colors.

I've seen other brands offering grey ink pens but I don't think I've ever found one as small as I use, they're usually bigger.

Sorry for such a late reply!

That's crazy! The sacrifice of the few pens is definitely worth it, your art is amazing. Do you use Prismacolor pens or a different brand? I know you can get a very small nib size on that brand and it would probably get used up faster with stippling.

That is a very good idea, to use "ruined" pens until they really just don't work. I have a large set of scrap booking pens (I know not the traditional drawing pens) and it has some grey fine tip pens. The nib size is not too small, but it might work. The company is called "Creative Memories" and it's a very good company. If you wanted, I might be able to send you a grey fine tip pen to see if you like it (I rarely, if ever, use grey).

I generally use micron pens which are a sakura brand. I might just have to look into that company! I use .005 for my pen size, so I'll have to see what they have.

Oh, right, that's a very good brand :) I don't think their nibs get as small as .005, but I'll keep a look out for grey pens in that size :)
