The artwork of Nicole Marie Walker. Naturally inspired custom artwork. Detailed drawings, watercolors, ink and acrylic paintings.

Most of my artwork is for sale up on Etsy, though you do not need to be on Etsy to purchase some art. Simply send me a message if you have any questions or for more information.

Art, for me, is an exploration of possibilities and appreciation of the world around me. It is the means through which I channel my curiosity and love of nature. I like to think of reality as being open to interpretation, begging to be explored in ways I've yet to imagine.

It has also been my experience that creating art is a bit like gambling. It's exciting, exhilarating and I never know exactly how things will turn out. Every stoke of my brush, or line of my pen is a gamble through which I grow in my expression. It can be exciting and exhilarating not to know exactly how things will turn out. I know for certain only that I've nothing to lose.

I know I haven't posted anything in forever, and those of you who've read my most recent journal entry know why.

Just wanted to share what I'm currently working on. =]

There are several inches on the right hand side of the painting that were cut off during scanning, in case you were wondering why it looks a little awkward! But I haven't really worked much on that side anyways. I will of course show the entire thing when it's finished.

Make sure you click to enlarge because it looks a little blurry if you don't.
Can you be creative when you're unhappy?

I've always had jobs, I started working when I was 14. I worked at a local restaurant for many years, I also worked at Mcdonalds for 2 years. At one point I was in college while working at both places. I did have other jobs at various points in my life, but they were short lived and not worth mentioning. A little over 4 years ago I applied for a job at a call center for a major security company. It was a great opportunity. There was a significant pay increase and the benefits were amazing, compared to what I was used to. I was very happy working there for the first 3 years or so, but things started to slowly change.

A year or so ago I began enjoy things less and less. I was reading less, drawing and painting less. Not enjoying things the way I used to. I didn't think much of it at first, I thought it was just a phase. I've gone through the rises and falls of creativity before and thought I just needed to be patient and trudge through.

It was around this time that my Grandmother died, which was devastating. She was like my other mother. I lived with her at many different times in my life. She was so important to me and so many other people. About 4 or 5 months ago I had a complete and total emotional breakdown. Between losing my grandmother and the stress of my job I was broken. I was crying at work all of the time, crying on the drive home. There were many times I wanted to wrap my car around a tree on the drive home from work, the thought of going back to that place was too much to bear. The thought of dealing with life was too hard.

I knew I couldn't go through with it. It would hurt my mother too much and I could never do that to her.

I couldn't go on with things the way they were. The constant crying and crushing depression was too much. It wasn't only hard on me, but on my family as well. My boyfriend was trying to be supportive but he was having a hard time understanding why I couldn't just pick myself up and trudge through. It was a difficult decision but I left my job. This decision  presented another set of problems. I couldn't collect unemployment because I had quit and I was having a hard time finding another job. I had no income and was being fully supported by my boyfriend, which put significant stress on our relationship.

I still couldn't draw or paint. I tried a few times but I'm not the kind of person who can be creative when I'm unhappy. I know for some people art and being creative is therapeutic, but that has never worked for me.

Art is a reflection of my state of mind.

If I'm unhappy, I can't be productive. I produce terrible things and constantly make mistakes which I can't seem to get past. My heart just isn't in it. Drawing and painting becomes a tedious task and I'm impatient through the entire process.

If I'm happy or content, everything seems to click. Drawing and painting becomes a relaxing, enjoyable experience.

I started seeing a therapist, and my doctor put me on some new medication. I don't like admitting to that, but I need what I need.
I also got a job working with my family, which is fantastic. I love my mother and my brothers. Things have been slowly falling into place. I'm only working part time so money is still tight, but my stress levels are down dramatically. I've even started a new painting, and I'm enjoying the process. It made my younger brother happy to see me working on something. He knows how difficult things have been.

Things can always get better.

Overall, things are looking up. I just wanted to share a bit about myself and my recent struggles. Let you all know why I haven't been around and haven't been posting anything. I hope things continue to get better!

I'm also looking for some input from some of you. What kind of things have you struggled with? Do you have any suggestions or stories to share?
  • Mood: Optimism
